Can Cherry Juice Reduce Muscle Cramps?

RW Knudsen Organic Just Tart CherryA recent study published in the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine found that runners who drank tart cherry juice before and after a strenuous running workout had significantly less muscle pain afterwards.  This is thought to be the result of the anthocyanins that give cherries their deep red color.

Shortly before this year’s Boston Marathon, I picked up a bottle of tart cherry juice at my local grocery store.  I drank it before and after the marathon. It tastes pretty good.  It’s not as tart as you might think from the name.

I flew to Toronto the morning after the marathon on a business trip and was only slightly sore.  I was able to go up and down stairs with ease and ran 3 miles on the treadmill at my hotel the next morning.

For more information on the benefits of tart cherry juice, check out this website. The folks from Cherry Marketing Institute were also giving out samples of tart cherry juice and dried cherries at this year’s Boston Marathon Expo.

I bought R.W. Knudsen’s Organic Just Tart Cherry Juice at my local Price Chopper grocery store.  You can check their website here to see if it is available in your area.  You can also get a coupon for $1.00 off here.

Have you tried tart cherry juice?  Did it reduce your muscle soreness?

  1. I think this is pretty cool, consider it being looked into for a certain runner I know ;)

  2. I do use tart cherry concentrate capsules everyday to reduce immflamtion from running. It works so well for me and can tell a difference if I miss a few days.

  3. Super interesting! I haven’t heard of using cherry juice to help inflammation. I’ll definitely keep this in mind for when I start running again :)
